It’s one of the biggest upsets of the year, but fans of Game of Thrones won’t be too unhappy. The HBO fantasy series scooped the gong for Outstanding Drama Series over the favoured Mad Men at the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards. It wasn’t all bad for the period drama, though, as seven-time nominee Jon Hamm finally took home the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series award.
Other winners include Game of Thrones’ Peter Dinklage, who secured Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for a second time, and Viola Davis, who is the first black actress to win the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
Game of Thrones took home the most gold with a record 12 awards. See the full list of winners and losers here.

I’m fine with Hamm finally getting an award, though my pick was Odenkirk. What I’m not fine with is Banks getting passed over in a season where the Dink was mostly in a background role. Was this just making up for last year?? Will Banks get an automatic makeup Emmy next year then? GOT’s weakest season didn’t deserve the win (though Hardhome should have at least been nominated for direction). Better Call Saul was undoubtedly the best show of the year, even topping a strong Mad Men finale and all the other great TV we had.
I didn’t see Viola Davis’s show so that result was a surprise. My pick was Claire Danes. Even though Homeland was iffy last year she elevated the material. Tambor was the obvious pick for comedy actor (weak year overall anyway, he was the only standout). P&R should have gotten either lead comedy actress or even best comedy, but then again I don’t watch Veep either so maybe I’m missing out. Supporting actress is another delayed reaction award, because Uzo’s big performance was the year before and she was ignored. Are they going to give it to Lena next year and perpetuate the cycle? I don’t care about the other categories, tho I’m happy to see Regina King win something (even if it was for a show I didn’t watch) because she was ignored on Southland for so many years.
So, it could have been worse, but there was definitely a trend towards people handing out awards for the wrong years. Get your shit together, Emmys.

I agree with every word. How did Dinklage even get nominated based on the last season?
