Johnny Box Office is back, baby, with his first official post on the new site!
I’ve got a great weekend in store for my first post back. It’s going to be a BIG MONEY WEEKEND. You can’t get any better than that and that’s what I’m promising you in the forecast.
War for the Planet of the Apes and Spider-Man: Homecoming will be battling it out for the top spot and it’s going to be a close call.
Let’s get down to it.
War for the Planet of the Apes
Synopsis: Another ape movie I won’t see.
Budget: $150 million
Rotten Tomatoes: 94%
Current Box Office: $0 million
Domestic Box Office: $0 million
Prior Weekend Box Office: $0 million
Our Prediction: $75 million
Comments: War was originally set for a $50-60 million weekend according to Fox projects, but thanks to good word-of-mouth and the unbelievable reviews, the studio is now hoping for a lot more.
Who can blame them? I’m expecting War to kill it at the box office and find $75 million. More than the $72.3 million takings of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes in 2014.
Spider-Man: Homecoming
Synopsis: Another Spider-Man reboot. Seriously.
Budget: $175 million
Rotten Tomatoes: 97%
Current Box Office: $293.6 million
Domestic Box Office: $154.6 million
Prior Weekend Box Office: $117 million.
Our Prediction: $53 million
Comments: Homecoming opened to HUGE numbers last week, so I’m definitely expecting a BIG drop this weekend. I feel as if 50% would be too generous. Let’s go with 55%.
$53 million.
Elsewhere: Despicable Me 3 should add $19 million, whereas The Big Sick aims to reel in $10 million and Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver is likely to add $8 million.
Next Weekend: Dunkirk is the big one. Valerian is another.
Last Year: The Secret Life of Pets took in $50.8 million in its second weekend.
My far out prediction? Spider-Man over Apes. I know it isn’t THAT far out, but I think it’s going to happen…

I had to adjust my projections for Apes. I’d go higher at 80.

Welcome back everybody.
If War ends up doing better than its predecessor, I could see a detour to spin-off city. Still think the first with James Franco was the best.
