Blind Item Revealed — Big Little Lies Cast & HBO

I’m being told this A list television show with a lot of hype is quietly becoming one of the most expensive on television, beating out Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead and possibly even The Crown.

‘No lie,’ says the source, ‘Not a single special effect, but a pricey cast swallowing money like there’s no tomorrow.’

So, tell me, Gossipers:

What is our big show?

The Story: HBO Exec Says the Network’s Budget Is Being ‘Raped’ by Game of Thrones and Big Little Lies

I didn’t expect this story to come out so publicly and so controversially and yet here we are, HBO executive and drama chief Francesca Orsi confirmed my blind item at a panel in Jerusalem by saying that “from a budget standpoint going into season two of Big Little Lies without any options in place we’ve been … um … short of raped.”

HBO did not have options for a second season of Big Little Lies as the show was planned to be a one season miniseries with no further episodes until producers and stars Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman pushed for more amidst critical and award acclaim.

The success of the first second has allowed Kidman and Witherspoon to demand whatever they want, which has led to the two actresses earning over a million per episode of the second season. I hear newbie Meryl Streep is also getting a salary in that ballpark.

Zoe Kravitz, who made $380,000 total for Season 1, will make $3 million in Season 2; Shailene Woodley will also see a big bump from her $1.7 million total salary for Season 1.

  1. Probably not a great idea to describe that situation as rape considering the show is about tackling women’s issues such as rape and domestic abuse….

  2. Who fucking watched this show? It didn’t even crack a million viewers and yet they’re making more bank than the Game of Thrones people? Crazy.

  3. I remember when 7 figure salaries for television shows were a rarity (SJP on SATC, Friends cast, Mad About You) and now they seem to be normal second season salary for names.

    • What show started the trend? Everyone credits True Detective with the start of the exodus of movie stars to television, but nobody mentioned Woody and Alright Alright’s salaries were high.
